Sen. Warren to FDA: Standardize GMO labeling

In a letter dated Aug. 22, the senators encouraged the FDA to implement a regulatory framework that will clarify labeling requirements for producers and foster transparency for consumers.
“Standardized labels will prevent misleading or confusing information from being presented to consumers, which will help them make informed decisions that will encourage market competition,” the senators wrote. “Furthermore, a reliable standard will promote transparency through labels that accurately reflect the most advanced scientific information available.”
The increased prevalence of GMOs in the U.S. food market has raised demand from consumers for more clarity in the marketing of these products. It has also drawn concern over the ability of existing regulations to keep up with new product developments and marketing.
“For producers, standardization will provide stability and ensure that labels provide correct information. In addition, finalizing labeling guidelines will benefit producers wishing to label their products based on consumer demand for these labels,” the senators wrote.
