Genetically engineered crops: Myths and facts
So let’s begin with genetically engineered crops. Critics say they are over-hyped, untested, unlabeled and damaging to the environment and our health. Supporters say they are safe to eat and better for the planet. So who’s right?
As for labeling, will any form of GMO labeling reinforce an erroneous perception that there is something wrong with GE crops, or do consumers have a right to know how their food is produced regardless, even if it is not materially different in nutritional or safety terms?
FoodNavigator-USA invited all three speakers in the education session devoted to this topic on Tuesday morning to go on camera and discuss these issues in more depth.
Check out FoodNavigator-USA in the coming days to see our video interviews with:
- Dr Wayne Parrott, professor of Crop Science at the University of Georgia - on how GE crops are regulated, and whether they are safe.
- Dr Bruce Chassy, Professor Emeritus of Food Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign - on the pros and cons of labeling foods containing ingredients derived from biotech crops.
- Dr Alison Van Eenennaam, Cooperative Extension Specialist, Animal Genomics and Biotechnology in the Department of Animal Science at UC Davis - on genetically engineered animals.
