M&A activity
A lot of money has changed hands this year. On the finished product side, drug giant Pfizer Inc. acquired Alacer Corp., for an estimated $350 million, Schiff Nutrition splashed $150 million on Airborne Inc., and Procter & Gamble got Vermont-based New Chapter for an undisclosed sum,
The supply side also saw some big deals, with Royal DSM acquiring Ocean Nutrition Canada and Fortitech for a combined $1.2 billion, Naturex snapping up US-based cranberry specialist Decas Botanical Synergies, BASF building its omega-3 portfolio with Pronova Biopharma (if approved by regulators) and Equateq.
Another acquisition of note was ChromaDex acquisition of the scientific and regulatory consulting services of Spherix Consulting.
On the retailer side, Vitamin Shoppe Inc. announced today that is has acquired Seattle-based chain Super Supplements for about $50 million.
For next year,we await the closing of the proposed acquisition of Schiff by Reckitt Benckiser Group Plc for a potential $1.4 billion.
