NPA chief: We backed right horses in election
Natural Products Association executive director John Shaw said the organization was highly effective in its campaign contribution strategy in the recent election.

“Every single candidate NPA backed won,” Shaw told NutraIngredients-USA. “No other trade association can say that.”

Speaking at the Supply Side West trade show in Las Vegas, Shaw said the outcome of the election, from California’s Proposition 37 going down to defeat to President Obama’s victory, did not come as a surprise.  As to  the latter, he said, “We are looking forward to an excellent relationship with the Administration.”

Now that the electioneering is over, Shaw said, the real and ongoing work of representing the interests of the natural products industry recommences.

Shaw said ironing out the issues surrounding the NDI draft guidance is one of the elements of that effort, but upholding the Dietary Supplements Health and Education Act forms the cornerstone.

“I think DSHEA sets the standard for legislative lawmaking,” Shaw said.

"The supplement industry for too long has sat idle,” he said. “We are going to support the consumer’s right to have access to supplements.”

“The NDI issue is very important for the supplement and related industries,” he said.

Shaw readily admitted that NPA had lost significant momentum in recent years.  That’s over, he said, and he said he intends to drive the organization forward with new purpose.  And a take-no-prisoners style will be part of the package.

“Anyone who gets in NPA’s way will be pushed aside.  We will defend DSHEA to the last,” he said.
