NPA has ‘candid’ discussion with FDA on NDI draft guidance
Food and Drug Administration (FDA) officials were “veryreceptive” during a meeting with the Natural Products Association (NPA) yesterday about its controversial draft guidance on new dietary ingredients (NDIs).

Speaking to NutraIngredients-USA last night, NPA vice president of scientific and regulatory affairs Dr Cara Welch said the meeting – with FDA supplements chief Dr Dan Fabricant and his team – had been “very productive”.

She added: “We had a candid discussion about everything from synthetic botanical constituents to grandfathered lists andthey were receptive to our concerns.”

The FDA would not say when it expected to finish reviewing comments or when it would release final guidance, but did clarify that it would enforce the regulation (Dietary Supplement Health & Education Act), and not its new draft guidance – in the meantime, she said.

Earlier this month, the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN) also emerged from a meeting with the FDA saying both sides were resolved to find a "constructive solution".
