JULY: FDA issues its draft guidance on NDIs
Two weeks later and New Orleans seemed like a distant memory, however, as the FDA unveiled a rather innocuous-sounding draft guidance document that some commentators argue could spell the end of the dietary supplements sector as we know it, unless it is substantially revised.
While a handful of commentators - notably Herbalife regulatory chief (and former FDA official) Bill Frankos - suggested talk of impending apocalypse for the supplements industry was a little premature, most of the trade was united in opposition.
Meanwhile, Senator Orrin Hatch (R-Utah - pictured) - the chief architect of the 1994 Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) - was also unimpressed.
Speaking to NutraIngredients-USA after Hatch hosted a town hall event to discuss the offending document, his press secretary said: “Senator Hatch was alarmed by the guidance. He does not believe it is consistent with DSHEA.”
