Brain food: Resveratrol, pterostilbene, magnesium, choline and multivitamins
It’s been an action-packed month on the brain food front, with a series of studies shedding new light on the potential of ingredients claimed to boost our grey matter.
First to hit the headlines were two mouse studies suggesting supplementation with resveratrol at doses achievable in the diet may boost mental function, but pterostilbene may be even more potent for brain boosting benefits.
These were followed by arandomized controlled trial from Australia suggesting a daily multivitamin and mineral supplement with added herbal ingredients may boost alertness and feelings of ‘general day-to-day well-being’.
Oops. What was the third thing? Something for Texas governor Rick Perry perhaps?
Oh yes – choline may protect against memory loss ...
And finally, a human study on the memory-boosting effects of magnesium-L-threonate - a new form of magnesium - has begun, with results due in the middle of next year.
