Omega-3 and the military
Suicide stats among US troops and service personnel has again focused attention on levels of omega-3, as a new study published in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry indicated that male US military personnel on active-duty between 2002 and 2008 with the lowest levels of DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) were at a 62% increased risk of suicide than counterparts with higher levels.
The news adds to previous reports on the US military’s interest in the potential of omega-3 fatty acids to improve mood and cognition and reduce the risk of suicide among service personnel:
