The first food pyramid (above) was introduced in 1992. After the Basic 7 (1943-56) came the Basic 4 (1956-92) of 1) meats, poultry, fish, eggs, beans, 2) dairy products, 3) grains, and 4) fruits and vegetables.
All that changed in 1992 with this first installment, hailed by the USDA as going "beyond the 'basic four food groups' to help you put the Dietary Guidelines into action".
