The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) launched a crackdown against third-party web marketers of açai supplements making fraudulent claims about their ability to drive weight loss.
Açai berries (pronounced ah-sigh-ee) have long formed part of the staple diet of Indian tribes. With the appearance of a purple grape (as shown in the image) and taste of a tropical berry, it has been shown to have powerful antioxidant properties thanks to a high level of anthocyanins, pigments that are also present in red wine.
The FTC has filed 10 lawsuits in six federal courts against firms using ‘fake’ news websites to market açai berry weight-loss products and has asked courts to freeze their assets pending trial.
