The Natural Products Association (NPA) has promoted Dr Cara Welch to vice president of scientific and regulatory affairs, in the wake of the departure to the FDA of Daniel Fabricant, PhD, this month.

She formerly served as scientific and regulatory affairs manager under Fabricant to work with, “regulatory, safety, nutrition and health issues” and helping NPA and industry members understand and respond to government initiatives that affect them.
“DR Welch has been a major contributor to achieving the success of both our Natural Seal and GMP certification programs, and she is the perfect choice to lead this department,” said NPA executive director and chief executive officer, John Gay.
“Dr. Welch has the right mix of knowledge and expertise to lead our very important self-regulatory programs for the industry, as well as represent industry positions in key states like California.”
Dr Welch studied at the Department of Medicinal Chemistry at Rutgers University under the direction of renowned plant biologist James E Simon, PhD, working on African botanicals and medicinal plants. She also completed a study on African traditional medicinal plants as a part of the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine Botanicals Research Center on Metabolic Syndrome at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center.
