The dark economic climate seems to have had little impact on one of the major US trade shows for the functional foods industry, where exhibitors and attendees reported ongoing healthy business.

“To look at it you wouldn’t know that the recession was on at a show like this. The product innovation continues; ingredients such as omega-3s, probiotics and superfruit extracts and vitamins and minerals continue to be incorporated into a vast variety of products,” he said.

According to the organizers of the trade show, New Hope Natural Media, exhibitor figures were up on last year, with a total 1,900 exhibiting firms.

One much-cited reason for the industry’s resilience in the face of a tight economic climate is a growing consumer focus on health and nutrition as an alternative to expensive healthcare.
