It's official! The IFT Annual Meeting & Food Expo is right
around the corner! Running from Saturday July 28th
through to Wednesday August 1st in Chicago, the
Institute of Food Technologists' event, this year dubbed "Food
Smarts", will draw attendees and exhibitors from around the world.

Despite the fact this has traditionally been an event for the mainstream food industry, the advent of functional foods is bridging this gap and thereby attracting the manufacturers of nutraceutical ingredients as well. Like a grain of sand on a beach, this is a just tiny sample of what to expect amidst some of the growing functional food offerings at the mammoth show about to descend on Chicago: -Shuster Laboratories will present a seminar on its Global Sourcing Quality Management program, designed to help dietary supplement manufacturers instil consumer confidence in the sourcing of their ingredients. The seminar will show companies how to identify possible risks in their supply chain, implement a traceability program and evaluate options for finished product testing. -Solbar will be featuring its latest developments in isolated soy proteins and functional protein concentrates. The manufacturer says one of its focuses is on the growing health and wellness segment. -LycoRed will launch its Lyc-O-Mato self-dried cherry tomatoes which are developed especially for high-lycopene. According to the Israeli firm, each Lyc-O-Mato cherry tomato ingredient provides more than 1mg of the powerful antioxidant lycopene, and as such it would take only five to provide the 5mg lycopene/serving recommended for the fortification of conventional foods. -Fenchem Enterprises will be launching a number of ingredients for use in functional foods. The Chinese company has devised branded LuMarin lutein and Nutra_Red lycopene beadlets using microencapsulation technology. The manufacturer is also launching branded prebiotic In-fibre inulin - derived from the Jerusalem artichoke - as well as EssenRose rosemary extract and OmaCare omega-3 fatty acids. -The Kaneka Corporation will present new applications for its CoQ10, which it has made available in water-dispersible powder form, as opposed to the oil-soluble versions previously available. -Archer Daniels Midland is addressing the nutritional needs of both baby boomers and children with on-the-go functional snacks using its Fibersol-2 dietary soluble fiber and CardioAid plant sterols. -Cargill will also be featuring healthy snacks and beverages, and the ingredient applications to support them. These include custom blends of calcium and inulin for bottled water, Xtend sucromalt for extended energy release for energy drinks, or Corowise plant sterols for diary.
