California-based CreAgri launched a high-concentration version of its patented olive oil-derived antioxidant at SupplySide West last week.

The organic, freeze-dried hydroxytyrosol powder, which is now available in 6 per cent concentration, offers extra application possibilities for a range of formulations, including dietary supplements, cosmetics and functional foods which require small volumes of the ingredient. It is ideal for combination formulations, said Dr Robert Crea, president and CEO at CreAgri.

The company has developed a patented technology to extract the polyphenols from the waste water produced during olive oil pressing. CreAgri claims that its Hidrox hydroxytyrosol has the highest free radical protection ever reported for an antioxidant compound and that it registers an ORAC value of 27,000.

Hidrox is also more efficiently absorbed than many other antioxidants, according to the firm.

Olive polyphenols have shown positive benefits on atherosclerosis, cancer and amtinmicroibal activity. They are also thought to enhance the immune system.

The small firm is currently working on alliances with finished product manufacturers to include Hidrox in their formulations. Last month it signed a distribution agreement with Maypro Industries to distribute Hidrox to supplement makers in Japan.
