Back to Basics has introduced High Oleic Sunflower Popcorn Oil, a new non-hydrogenated, trans fat tree snack that is said to make a healthier option to the traditional full-fat recipe.

Housewares innovator Back to Basics Products yesterday launched itsbutter-flavored, high oleic Sunflower Popcorn Oil, a featured new product at The Gourmet Show food expo inSan Francisco.

The Sunflower Popcorn Oil has a high concentration of monounsaturatedfatty acid in the form of high oleic acid at 79 per cent. Some studies haveindicated monounsaturated fatty acids have the ability to reduce the harmfulcholesterol (LDL) in the blood while maintaining the "good" one (HDL).Moreover, a high proportion of fat as oleic acid in moderately low-fat dietshas been shown to lower serum cholesterol and the risk of coronary heartdisease, Back to Basics claims.

Company president Tom Daniels said: "We launched ourpopcorn program last fall with a partially hydrogenated soybean oil. Afterfurther research we felt our customers deserved better and have made the moveto provide a heart-healthy snack product. Consumers can now enjoy popcorn with no trans fat."

Back to Basics' non-hydrogenated, butter-flavored Sunflower Popcorn Oilalso features vitamin E content, which the company says provides for a safer cooking environmentdue to its high flash point, and does not cause the yellow build-up commonly associatedwith other cooking oils.

Available nationwide to consumers this August, the butter-flavoredoil will be sold in 12-ounce bottles with a suggested retailprice of $2.99.
