A nutritional supplement commonly given to high-performance racehorses is being made available to humans for the first time.

Pro-Formula Laboratories has created a performance and health enhancing supplement for humans based on its top-selling electrolyte supplement for horses.

Lyte Now is an oral electrolyte gel that is said to provide minerals lost through exercise, improper dieting, stress and perspiration, thus preventing dehydration, muscle cramps, heat stress and exhaustion.

Lyte Now contains essential electrolytes mined from a 2,000- acre mineral deposit in the Great Basin in Nevada. Electrolytes are mineral salts such as sodium, magnesium, calcium and potassium that help cells function normally. They play a major role in many of the body's functions, providing energy, balance and stamina as well as aiding healing, digestion and muscle action, the company claimed.

The minerals are essential to the formation of new body tissues, the ncomapny claimed. They transport electrical charges across the cell membranes, making muscle action possible. They trigger nerve functions and facilitate the transfer of energy within cells. They also maintain the body's fluid balance.

The company said that Lyte Now delivers electrolytes to the body quickly via a syringe applicator, "providing energy and speeding up recovery from exercise" . Of course, whether this will prove to be as appealing to sportsmen and women as the wide range of products containing electrolytes already on the market - such as sports drinks - remains to be seen.
