USP is an international nonprofit organization founded in 1820 that establishes documentary standards (i.e., written specifications), produces reference materials, and offers verification services for dietary supplements ingredients and products. Standards for the identity, purity, quality, strength, and consistency of pharmaceuticals, dietary supplements, and food ingredients are published in the USP–NF, the USP Dietary Supplements Compendium (DSC), and the Food Chemicals Codex (FCC). Over 550 monographs for dietary supplements are included in the DSC, and the FCC contains more than 1,100 food ingredient monographs. In addition, over 400 reference materials are offered to support analytical methods in the three publications.
Through USP’s verification services, manufacturers, suppliers, and buyers have an independent means of verifying the quality of dietary supplement ingredients and products. Items that meet program requirements - e.g., GMP audit, laboratory testing, and manufacturing documentation review - are awarded the USP Verified Mark. The Mark has appeared on more than 300 million dietary supplement product labels. By providing standards and programs for drugs and foods, USP strives to equip manufacturers, suppliers, and regulators with valuable tools to help safeguard global supply chains of raw materials and finished products.
