As 2012 comes to a close, NutraIngredients-USA looks back on an action packed year. In the second of our series of galleries capturing the year’s main events, we take a look at the regulatory issues that made the headlines. GMPs GMPs and industry compliance have dominated headlines in 2012. At SupplySide West, lots of people had an opinion on the subject: Elan Sudberg, CEO of Alkemists Laboratories , has said that current GMP compliance levels are ‘all over the place’, but ‘for the most part there is an increase in compliance’. Aaron Secrist from NOW Foods answered yes to our question: Is finished product testing the next big wave in GMP warning letters? While, George Pontiakos, chief executive of BI Nutraceuticals, added that the marquee players in the industry have been complying with GMPs since before GMPs were a regulatory issue . However, the industry was getting bad press because low barriers of entry have enabled ‘grifters, cobblers, and vermin’ to establish a business presence FDA’s Dr Fabricant has been equally vocal about how the Agency views industry compliance, and quotes by him in the Chicago Tribune angered many within the industry. In an interview with NutraIngredients-USA at SupplySide West , Dr Fabricant stood by his comments, and noted: “There is not a clear indication there will be a drop in non-compliance anytime soon, and that concerns us.” |
