News in brief

Steroid-spiked supplement maker pleads guilty

California-based VMG Global has pleaded guilty of selling products marketed as dietary supplements but illegally spiked with steroids, according to the NY Times.

Between 2005 and mid-2009, the company allegedly deceived consumers and the government knowingly by marketing two products (Tren Xtreme and Mass Xtreme) under the guise of dietary supplements but containing a synthetic anabolic steroid.

The NY Times says that, according to a plea agreement filed in US District Court in San Jose, VMG Global pleaded guilty to one charge of introducing unapproved drugs with the intent to defraud and mislead.

Increased attention

Supplement products for sports performance have been under increased scrutiny of late, after a number of high-profile cases where supplements were blamed for failed anti-doping tests.

Doping concerns are a major bane for the dietary supplements industry, which bears the brunt of blame as a whole even when the contamination issues are linked only to certain irresponsible firms.
