Infographic: The cost of a sick day

The immune health market is growing, but with Americans estimated to catch one billion colds and flus each year, what is the current cost of a sick day?

The common cold is one of the most widespread illnesses in the world. It is estimated that adults suffer from between two and four episodes annually, whilst children in school may have as many as 12 episodes per year.

recent Cochrane review  estimated that the total economic impact of cold-related work loss exceeds $20 billion per year. As a result, Americans spend around $2.9 billion on over-the-counter drugs (and another $400 million on prescription medicines) for symptomatic relief of cold.

Supplement and functional food and beverage manufacturers are increasingly catching on to the potential for immune support products, and big growth is expected for the category. Indeed, analysts predict that food, beverage, herbals and other supplements offering immune support set to grow from 2011’s $17.8 billion to $28.7 billion by 2015.
