Japanese firm Hamari Chemicals has obtained kosher certification for its functional ingredients, including its flagship gut health, PepZin GI zinc-L-Carnosine product.
The firm’s US partner Xsto Solutions said that Hamari’s entire nutritional ingredient line has been certified by the Kosher Certification Service (KCS).
The company operates in both pharma and nutritional areas and is looking to boost its nutraceutical activity in North America, hence its engagement with Xsto which offers a turnkey sales and marketing service for companies wishing to do business in North America and globally.
Certification includes Hamari’s PepZinGI brand Zinc-L-Carnosine and CarnoLife L-Carnosine. “Certificates have been issued and a Kosher notation may now be noted on the consumer packaging,” said Xsto founder Dan Murray. BenfoPure Benfotiamine, Hamari’s soluble thiamine (vitamin B1) version, has also gained a certification.
“Hamari has a unique strength in peptide chemistry which has brought the side opportunity first in L-Carnosine and Benfo and then later in Zinc-Carnosine,” Murray said.
California-based KCS inspected and graded processes by which the antioxidant ingredients are prepared, examined the raw materials and will engage in regular inspections of the production facilities, said Murray.
Hamari’s production facilities in Japan have also been inspected by the US Food and Drug Administration, meet current US Good Manufacturing Processes (GMPs) and PepZin GI has gained FDA new dietary ingredient (NDI) status.
Hamari Chemical's marquee PepZin GI zinc-carnosine is a crystalline amino-mineral complex of L-carnosine and zinc that has been available on the US market since 2003 and been the subject of 40 published papers including 12 human trials.
PepZin GI is marketed to players in the gut health space at doses around 75mg per day, which cost in the vicinity of 9c.
According to the companies, zinc-carnosine has been used in Japan since 1994 for stomach disorders such heartburn, indigestion, diarrhea, stomach irritation and ulcers.
It is said to help maintain the protective mucosal lining in the stomach and intestines – the natural barrier of our gastrointestinal track – which protects the stomach and gut from harmful bacteria and acid exposure.
They said digestive aids typically focus on suppressing or neutralizing stomach acid, whereas zinc-carnosine supported, “natural cytoprotective mechanisms without interfering in the normal digestive process (i.e. acid suppression).”
Murray said kosher certification was more important for the European and North American markets than in Asia. “Not having Kosher certification can and does limit opportunities in North America,” he said.
