Dieticians recommend foods for flu prevention

Registered dietitians in the US are recommending that consumers “protect” their family during the flu season with foods that can help boost immunity, including probiotics, vitamin D and garlic.

The advice from Meals Matter – a nutrition portal sponsored by the Dairy Council of California – is intended to encourage healthy eating from a variety of food groups rather than provide a list of ingredients shown scientifically to benefit immune health, registered dietitian.

“The overarching theme is meant to be a message that having an overall healthy diet can help maintain health. We’re reminding consumers that these healthy foods may have additional benefits,” registered dietitian Andrea Garen told NutraIngrdients-USA.com.

“Immune-building foods” recommended by the group include yogurt and cultured milk products that may contain probiotics as well as milk fortified with vitamin D. Citrus fruits are also on the list for their vitamin C content, and chicken, meat and peanuts are recommended for their zinc content.
