Cyanotech hires exec for newly created COO position

Cyanotech Corporation created a chief operations officer position and has named Gerard “Gerry” Watts to fill the role.  Cyanotech, based in Kailua Kona, Hawaii, supplies astaxanthin and spirulina and manufactures a line of dietary supplements using the ingredients.

“With his expertise in profit and supply chain optimization, lean enterprise operations and organizational development, Gerry will add depth to the Company’s management team,” said Brent Bailey, Cyanotech president and CEO.

Cyanotech was one of the pioneers of haematococcus pluvialis cultivation, the algae species from which astaxanthin is extracted. The company was also a founding member of the Natural Algae Astaxanthin Assocation (NAXA), a trade organization whose mission to highlight the differences between the natural algae-derived astaxanthin offered by the association’s members (Cyanotech, Algatechnologies Ltd and Fuji Chemical Industry Co Ltd).

Watts has experience at North Shore Greenhouses, a California $10 million fresh grower and shipper of full line living herbs produced in hydroponic greenhouses. Watts also served as president of SunOpta Foods / SunOpta International Fruit Group and was vice president Maui Land and Pineapple Company in Maui, Hawaii.
