Capsugel to be totally independent and ‘managed separately’

The proposed acquisition of Capsugel by an affiliate of Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co L.P. (KKR) for $2.375 billion in cash will see the hard capsule manufacturer stand alone despite potential synergies in a wider portfolio.

Capsugel, which generated approximately $750 million in revenue and manufactured more than 180 billion hard capsules in 2010, will join KKR’s private equity portfolio, which includes over 60 portfolio companies with over $210 billion of annual revenues and more than 900,000 employees.

A spokesperson for KKR told that Capsugel would be “independent and managed separately” within the wider KKR portfolio of companies. KKR has invested in the pharma sector previously, said the spokesperson, and therefore has ‘know-how’ for this industry, but KKR plans to maintain Capsugel as an independent entity.
