A nutraceutical product said to help prevent glaucoma, the third
largest cause of blindness in the world, has been launched by
ScienceBased Health in America.

The new Optic Nerve Formula contains the herbal Ginkgo biloba, said to enhance blood flow in the eyes, and vitamins C and E, alpha lipoic acid and n-acetyl cysteine to boost the eye's anti-oxidative defenses. Omega-3 fatty acids, magnesium, B-vitamins, taurine and bioflavonoids were also included to help keep blood vessels healthy, according to the company.

Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of vision loss in the US. According to The Glaucoma Foundation, approximately 3 million people in the US have glaucoma, including 6 per cent of those over the age of 65. The World Heath Organisation estimates the number of suspected glaucoma cases worldwide to be as much as 105 million.

"It is increasingly evident that oxidative processes play an important role in a variety of ocular diseases, including macular degeneration and glaucoma. Optic Nerve Formula is an evidence-based formula with a scientifically sound rationale. This antioxidant supplement is designed to protect the optic nerve from damaging conditions," said Ron Gallemore, assistant clinical professor at the UCLA School of Medicine.

Most patients with glaucoma have no symptoms of the disorder and approximately half of all people with damage from glaucoma are unaware of it.

"There is now compelling scientific evidence showing that the nutrients in Optic Nerve Formula can play an important role in protecting the health of the optic nerve," said David Hanabusa, president of ScienceBased Health.

The company says its new formula supports normal vascular and nerve functioning, promotes ocular blood flow and also increases protective antioxidant intake.
