Experts from the Natural Products Association, Metagenics, Penn State University, and Greenberg Traurig LLP will discuss the opportunities and challenges of marketing products positioned for inflammation in the FREE-TO-ATTEND NutraIngredients-USA Inflammation forum.

The understanding of how nutrition and diet can influence inflammation is deepening. Several years ago it was touted as the next big thing for nutrition and nutraceuticals, but regulatory constraints have stifled what can be said about the potential benefits. ‘Inflammation’ is not forbidden in structure-function claims, however, but you have to choose the wording carefully.

In this forum, NutraIngredients-USA will look at the role of chronic inflammation in every day health, the key anti-inflammatory nutrients and ingredients, the science to support the potential, the legal considerations for marketing such products, and how best to communicate these benefits to consumers.

Ann Skulas-Ray, PhD, Research Associate, Penn State Universit​y: As a research associate at Penn State Univeristy, Dr Skulas-Ray has researched how polyunsaturated fatty acids, plant-derived compounds, and other agents can be used to attenuate excessive inflammation. She has also looked into how sleep quality, physical activity, and psychosocial parameters affect inflammation and its resolution.

Justin Prochnow, Shareholder, Greenberg Traurig LLP: ​A shareholder in the law firm Greenberg Traurig LLP, Prochnow focuses on regulatory and business issues in the food, medical device, drug and cosmetic industries. Prochnow works with dietary supplement, sports nutrition, beverage, conventional food companies deal with the Food and Drug Administration, the Federal Trade Commission and other regulatory agencies.

Corey Hilmas, MD, PhD, Senior VP of Scientific and Regulatory Affairs, Natural Products Association:​ A medical doctor with a degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine and a doctorate in pharmacology and toxicology, Dr Hilmas joined the NPA after having served as Chief of the Dietary Supplement Regulation Implementation Branch under the Division of Dietary Supplement Programs at the FDA for more than two years. Prior to this he served as Senior Toxicologist for Dietary Ingredients at the FDA, and worked as a physiologist and principal investigator for the US Army Medical Research Institute of Chemical Defense.

Cheryl Kos, ND, Metagenics:​ Cheryl has lived in Europe, Asia and the US and works in the regulatory group at Metagenics on global product substantiation and new ingredient assessment.
