A leading referral source for complementary and alternative doctors in the US, the American College of Advancement in Medicine (ACAM), is calling for volunteers for a major heart study involving more than 2,300 patients.

The study's principal investigator, Gervasio Lamas, will hold special presentations at ACAM's November Conference in Phoenix, US to recruit sites and discuss the study's scientific requirements with participating ACAM doctors. Physicians wanting to qualify for the study can also contact the ACAM website.

In March, the National Institutes of Health's alternative medicine center will begin enrolling participants at more than 100 different locations around the country. The new five-year study will be the first large-scale clinical trial to determine the safety and efficacy of EDTA chelation therapy.

"ACAM has long awaited a comprehensive and fair evaluation of a therapy which we feel has a major role to play along with diet, lifestyle, and appropriate conventional medical care," said ACAM President, Ronald Hoffman.

To enroll in the NIH-funded study, patients must be 50 or older, have had a heart attack more than 3 months prior to evaluation, don't smoke, have notundergone an angioplasty or bypass surgery and have not had chelation therapy before.

The therapy is designed to eliminate toxic metals, especially mercury, from tissues. Participants will receive 40 intravenous infusions under methods endorsed by the American College for Advancement in Medicine.

Prospective participants may obtain more information on the study and qualifications by contacting the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) .
