The majority of general practitioners do believe in the health benefits of "live"yoghurt, a new survey from the US reports this week.

The "Live Active Culture (LAC) Yogurt Survey,'' funded by food group The Dannon Company, and carried out in July, 2001 by Monroe Mendelsohn Research, surveyed 565 primary care physicians across the United States to ascertain whether they believe there are health benefits associated with the regular consumption of live active cultures.

According to The Dannon Company, the survey reveals that two out of three doctors who counsel the majority of their patients on nutritional issues recommend yoghurt because it offers overall nutritional health benefits.

Scientific studies suggest that live yoghurt is a good source of calcium and helps maintain intestinal microflora.
