If the foods you eat are brown and beige, you are in trouble, according to David Heber, director of the UCLA Center for Human Nutrition and author of a new book on diet and colour.

In "What Color Is Your Diet?" Heber claims that if you consume brown and beige foods it means you are probably eating foods like steaks and french fries, snack foods and refined grains.

The assorted colours in fruits and vegetables are indicative of "specific beneficial substances that help to prevent the common diseases that affect many of us as we get older,"he adds.

Heber has coded plant foods into seven colours: red, red-purple, orange, orange-yellow, yellow-green, green and white-green. Each colour provides different health benefits. He recommends people "colorise" their diets by eating at least one serving of a fruit or vegetable from each colour each day.
