In June 2003, Health Canada published a final regulation establishing pre-market licensing - what would be called registration in the United States - for all natural health products (NHPs), along with other requirements for NHPs.
Theregulations become effective according to a rolling schedule, beginning in January 2004 with part of the rule depending on a demonstration that goodmanufacturing practices (GMPs) are in place.
US body, the National Nutritional Food Association reports that it is important to note that the Canadian GMPs may differ from the proposed FDA dietary supplement GMPs. As such there may be additional requirements to obtain a site license for US based plants producing products for export into the Canadian market.
