Best Life International is warning consumers not to buy its dietary supplement Viga, promoted for increasing sexual performance, as it has been found to contain the unlabeled drug ingredient sildenafil.
The recall is the latest in a number of similar cases of products, sold as dietary supplements said to enhance sexual desire and performance, found to be contaminated with prescription drugs.
The interaction between nitrates and sildenafil can result in life-threatening lowering of blood pressure, according to the Food and Drug Administration. The agency added that while the use of nitrates in any form is an absolute contraindication for sildenafil users, the potential for this product to be taken by unknowing nitrate users is real, since erectile dysfunction is often a concurrent condition in patients with diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, smokers and patients with ischemic heart disease.
Consumers who have purchased Viga tablets have been urged to immediately discontinue their use and return to their place of purchase or directly to Best Life International. Earlier this week we reported on a similar recall in Canada, concerning a Chinese herbal product contaminated with prescription drug tadalafil.
