Cow’s milk allergy in infancy has serious impact on both the baby and the mother. The cow’s milk allergic baby suffers from problems like eczema, wheezing, diarrhea, reflux and extreme vomiting, leaving its mother puzzled with worries regarding her baby’s health and growth performance. There is a strong trend that children who suffered from cow’s milk allergy in infancy develop asthma, hay fever or dermatitis to inhalant allergens later in life. This emphasizes the importance of reducing the risk of development of cow’s milk allergy in early life. Replacing standard infant formulas by formulas based on protein hydrolysates offers the solution for most babies with cow’s milk allergy. These hydrolysates need to be of consistent high quality, meeting all safety requirements for hypo-allergenic infant formulas. This presentation will discuss the prevalence and mechanism of cow’s milk allergy in infancy and how hydrolysates work in the risk reduction of cow’s milk allergy.
