Non-GMO Project verified product sales surge 66% to $2.4bn

Non-GMO Project verified sales surged 66% in past year

Sales of non-GMO Project verified products surged by 66% in the past year to $2.4bn, according to new data* from SPINS.

The stamp is now on more than 6,000 products, with the most activity in chips, pretzels and snacks, non-dairy beverages and cold cereal.

According to findings unveiled at Organic Monitor’s Sustainable Foods Summit in San Francisco in January, Non-GMO Project Verified is the fastest growing food eco-label in North America, with sales of certified products topping $1bn in 2011.

While USDA’s National Organic Program (NOP) identifies genetic modification as an excluded method, USDA certified organic products are not tested for GMOs.

By contrast, The Non-GMO Project Verification program tests products for GMO content at points along the production chain considered to be high-risk for GMO contact.  

*The data covers the 52 weeks ended September 29, 2012, covering natural channel stores, specialty gourmet stores and Nielsen ScanTrack data covering FDMx (food, drug and mass merchandise stores excluding Walmart), Walmart, club stores, dollar stores and military stores.
