As 2012 comes to a close, NutraIngredients looks back on an action packed year. In the third of our series of galleries capturing the year’s main events, we take a look at the biggest business deals of the year.
February saw the first big acquisition of 2012, with drug giant Pfizer Inc. adding Alacer Corp., maker and distributor of Emergen-C products, to its Consumer Healthcare division for an estimated $350 million.
“We expect that our global network and deep expertise in dietary supplements combined with our desire to provide consumers with high-quality products will make Emergen-C more accessible than it has ever been before,” said Paul Sturman, President of Pfizer Consumer Healthcare.
“Emergen-C products add to and greatly complement our market-leading dietary supplement portfolio.”
Just over a month later and Schiff Nutrition splashed $150 million on Airborne Inc.
Speaking at the time of the acquisition, Tarang Amin, president and CEO of Schiff, said: “We are excited about the Airborne acquisition, which fits well with our strategy and establishes Schiff as a leader in the immune support segment.
“We believe that both Airborne and Emergen-C can be successful in the marketplace.”
The OTC immunity category is valued at over $1 billion, growing at about 3%, he said. Within this is the category of immune support, which is valued at about $0.5 billion and growing at an impressive 5 to 6%.
