The American Herbal Products Association (AHPA) has issued new guidance for manufacturers of liquid herbal products in which ethanol is used as a solvent and then removed.

According to the new guidance, which can be found HERE, recommends that manufacturers of liquid herbal products should refrain from using "alcohol-free" on product labeling when ethanol is used as a solvent and is subsequently removed, unless the manufacturer establishes through appropriate testing that alcohol is not detected in the product.

The association is instead encouraging the use of such terms as "alcohol-removed," "dealcoholized," or "non-alcoholic" if the product contains less than 0.5% ethanol by volume. AHPA also encourages the inclusion of the phrase "contains less than 0.5% alcohol by volume" or a significantly similar phrase.

The guidance policy was developed at the recommendation of the Small Business Committee and drafted with support of the Standards Committee. AHPA encourages its members and non-member companies to adopt these policies to establish consistent and informed trade practices.
