Water soluble lipids offered at 1-2 cents

Illinois start-up SoluBlend Technologies has self affirmed GRAS (generally regarded as safe) for a range of lipid ingredients that its patented technology is able to convert to water solubility for use in fruit juices and carbonated beverages.

SoluBlend spent about $50,000 in gaining a review from a panel of independent scientists of its safety and toxicology data for nutrients such as omega-3, phytosterols, resveratrol, CoQ10, vitamin D3 and vitamin E.

Chief executive officer Dr Richard Staack told NutraIngredients-USA.com the patented technology allowed such ingredients to be delivered in water soluble efficacious form for about 1-2 cents per serve.

The technology was launched last year at the Supply Side West show in Las Vegas and Staack said it had prompted interest from major beverage players, as well as some in the confectionery business, and soup makers.

“There will be launches coming up in the summer,” he said. “We have been contacted by the largest beverage players who are interested in what this technology can do. In addition the largest raw material suppliers are evaluating it.”

He said a “secret ingredient” was the backbone of the proprietary technology that did not employ nanotechnology.

He said omega-3 had proven harder to convert than resveratrol and Co-enzymeQ10.

In a statement Staack said: "Achieving self-affirmed GRAS status for water-soluble lipid products assures our customers that they can safely use these clinically validated ingredients in an array of foods and beverages aimed at improving consumers' overall heart health. With this new patented technology, we are now opening up opportunities to provide shelf-stable, value-added and clear fortified beverages and foods that never existed on the market.”

He said his company’s technology was superior to nano-encapsulated ingredients that tended to fall to the bottom of formulations, and on the marketing side, consumers are wary of nanotechnology.
