In a few months, farmers will be selecting the soybean varieties they will plant next year. But what makes one variety more valuable than another, questions the United Soybean Board (USB).

According to the industry board - made up of 61 farmer-directors - a recent economic analysis explains the importance of protein and oil content to the value of a soybean.

The analysis investigates how recent geographical shifts in US soybean production caused the overall protein level of the US soybean crop to slip.

The analysis also demonstrates the importance of raising the protein level of the US soybean crop without sacrificing oil or yields, said the USB.

Meal is typically worth 7 to 10 cents per pound to a processor, while oil is generally worth 14 to 25 cents per pound. Any gain made from an increase in protein may be worthless if the oil content decreases.

A new initiative designed to improve the protein and oil content of US soybeans and the competitiveness of US soybean farmers will be unveiled at the Midwest Soybean Conference, July 25-26, in Sioux Falls, San Diego.
