Astronauts on recent space missions have tested the use of specially formulated dietary supplements designed to meet the nutritional needs of long-duration spaceflight.

The antioxidant and multivitamin products were formulated by Houston-based AmeriSciences as part of a project with NASA/Jphnson Space Center (JSC).

According to the company, the products were used and tested by astronauts on two missions in May and July this year, and are now “in use and testing” on the International Space Station.

AmeriSciences said astronauts taking the supplements would be exposed to “an increased risk of higher levels of radiation and other medical concerns” through ‘spacewalks’ and high-orbit location.

"This is just the first step towards preparing for the rigors of long-duration space flight on the human body. The results from this research can impact everyone's health here on Earth," said Lou Gallardo, chairman of AmeriSciences.
