Raisio sees sunny future for green labelling

Finnish ingredients supplier and Benecol brand owner, Raisio, has diversified its green labelling scheme to incorporate its Elovena snack drink, Sunny.

The product will now come with its carbon dioxide emissions printed on-pack and follows in the carbon footsteps of Elovena oat flakes that became the first Finnish foods to be carbon labelled in April, 2008.

Raisio said Sunny’s carbon dioxide emissions totalled 95 grams per 100 grams of product, which covered the products entire life cycle from cultivation to warehouse storage, a level that meant Sunny could be classified as an environmentally-friendly product.

Raisio’s CO2 label has generated a great deal of interest and talk among consumers and decision-makers,” said Raisio chief executive officer, Matti Rihko. “There is a growing tendency in Finland, and elsewhere in Europe, to consider luxury to mean things that create mental and physical well-being. Plant-based nutrition is part of this trend,” He added: ”Food accounts for one-third of the environmental impacts of households, which is equal to that of housing or traffic. We believe that in the near future, CO2 emissions labelling will grow more common on food packages alongside the price and nutritional content labels already in use.”
