Lifeway Foods, the maker of the healthy dairy product kefir, reported sales growth of 23 per cent for fiscal 2005, thanks to new distribution agreements.

The company, which recently signed a new agreement with Costco, said sales for the year reached $20.1 million, while fourth quarter sales also rose by more than 20 per cent on the prior year to $5.2 million.

Julie Smolyansky, chief executive, called 2005 "a milestone year" for the firm.

The firm redesigned the kefir packaging, helping to attract new customers such as Target, Walmart and most recently Costco.

"We also saw our sales to our existing customers increase by double digits as well," said Smolyansky.

Lifeway claims to be the leading supplier of kefir, a dairy beverage that contains ten types of probiotic cultures. Most regular yogurt only contains two or three of these cultures.

In coming months the firm will update the packaging for the rest of the product line and introduce new healthy dairy products, said Smolyansky.
