Zeaxanthin supplier Chrysantis has won a patent for its branded marigold extract, strengthening the firm’s eye health ingredient portfolio.

Zeaxanthin, in combination with lutein, is said to help guard against Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) and cataracts. Chrysantis says its branded Ezeyes ingredient is the same form of zeaxanthin found naturally in fruits and vegetables.

The new US patent – 7,575,766 – is for Tagetes erecta (Marigold) With Altered Carotenoid Compositions and Ratios. It adds to two other patents that cover zeaxanthin produced by marigolds, as well as beta carotene, phytoene, phytofluene, cryptoxanthins and other carotenoids synthesized in the petals and leaves of Chrysantis marigolds.
