Plant protein specialist, Burcon NutraScience Corporation, has announced an allowance from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for a patent application that reduces phytic acid in the manufacture of protein isolates.

The USPTO issues allowances when a patent application has cleared internal review and is close to issuance.

Phytic acid occurs in canola meal and soybean meal and is thought to reduce the availability of minerals such as calcium, magnesium, zinc and iron if there is too much of it in the diet.

“This most recent notice of allowance from the United States Patent Office is valuable as it covers important processing conditions for producing protein isolates from oilseed meals with improved nutritional characteristics,” said Burcon president and chief executive officer, Johann F Tergesen.
