2010 no bogey year for Canadian health products

The 2010 deadline for Canadian health care products to be registered under the Natural Health Products Directive (NHPD) legislation will not be the shock many are expecting, according to a Canadian consultancy.

NHP regulations dictate natural products must gain a Natural Products license by January 1, 2010, but Dicentra Inc says Health Canada will act with a soft touch as the deadline approaches, due in part to a backlog in applications.

The fact the regulation says, “All natural health products must comply with all the Regulations by January 1, 2010”, should be understood in the context of a backlog and a focus on drug-like products.

“The NHPD has stated that they will not focus their enforcement action on those products that do not pose an undue risk,” Dicentra said.
