RFI Ingredients, a US supplier of natural food ingredients, has added a new antioxidant product to its line of OxyPhyte products - composed of GRAS extracts selected for their antioxidant activity.

The company claims that OxyPhyte Ultra Blend, a combination of white tea, rosemary and apple, offers a good ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity) and can provide the antioxidant equivalent of several servings of fruits and vegetables in either supplement or functional food or beverage form.

The Ultra Blend product was the subject of a recent trial to measure bioavailability in human subjects. For the study, conducted at the Health Research Studies Center in Stanford, California, a baseline ORAC level of blood serum of subjects was measured prior to ingesting the OxyPhyte product and then again after 30 minutes and one hour.

Increases of blood ORAC levels averaged 12 per cent and were as high as 32 per cent, the company reports, suggesting that the OxyPhyte product is absorbed into the blood and increases the antioxidant capacity of the blood plasma.

RFI chief executive officer Jeff Wuagneux commented: "We're very excited about the results of this study, as we can now validate that our product works. We are the only company that is actually putting science behind our OxyPhyte antioxidant line with human bioavailability studies."
